How it Works

Myths About Online Learning

MYTH: Students who attend online schools lack socialization and social skills.

FACT: Students at Destinations Career Academy (DCA) can participate in academic and social outings. In the past, these outings and activities have included trips to museums, skate parks, zoos, businesses, etc. Additionally, students are encouraged and supported to participate in jobs shadows, college visits, etc. to ensure they are prepared for what comes after high school.

MYTH: Students spend all day staring at a computer.

FACT: Like a traditional high school, DCA runs an eight-period day; however, most students do not have classes every hour, and in many cases, even every day. However, students are expected to check in for each of their classes each day and complete any assigned activities. And, if a student misses a class (called Class Connects or CCs), they are then expected to review the recorded class.

MYTH: Students have to teach themselves the material.

FACT: Just because you’re not physically sitting in front of your teachers physically, doesn’t mean they won’t be there to guide you along the way. Online teachers are responsible for engaging their students and teaching them the subject matter, just as they would in a brick-and-mortar class.

MYTH: Online schools don't meet requirements for public schools.

FACT: DCA is a public school (virtual charter) that operates outside of a traditional classroom. Students are required to take standardized tests mandated by the state of Wisconsin. The curriculum is developed by a team of education professionals and delivered by engaging classroom educators dedicated to engaging young minds and providing interesting and interactive learning experiences.
