New Year, New Habits: A Fresh Start for DCAWI Students and Families

Stories & Spotlights

As students and families at Destinations Career Academy of Wisconsin (DCAWI) get ready for the 2025–26 school year, there’s one thing we can all agree on: a strong start makes a big difference. Whether you’re just beginning your journey with online learning or returning for another year, this is the perfect time to reset routines, set goals, and create daily habits that fuel confidence and success.

At DCAWI, students don’t just take classes. They explore career pathways, build real-world skills, and learn how to manage their time in ways that prepare them for the future. But to make the most of this opportunity, it helps to be intentional from day one.

Here are five simple ways students and parents—aka, the Dream Team—can work together to make this school year the best one yet.

1. Create a Consistent Routine That Sets the Tone

Online learning gives you the flexibility to learn at your own pace, but it still helps to treat each day with structure and purpose. Try setting a consistent wake-up time, building in breaks, and ending each day with a brief check-in to reflect on what went well.

For students, that routine might mean logging in at the same time every day, tackling the hardest subjects first, and setting goals for the week. For parents, it means supporting that structure—and offering encouragement when motivation dips.

2. Check In with Your Digital Tools—Every Day

Staying connected is key, and at DCAWI, digital tools help make that easy. Whether it’s the K12 app, the student dashboard, or class announcements from teachers, make a habit of checking for updates every morning and afternoon.

Set alarms or reminders if needed; just five minutes a day can keep you on top of assignments, deadlines, and school news. And for parents, staying connected through these platforms means you can better support your student without needing to hover.

3. Focus on Wellness, Not Just Academics

We know that healthy bodies and healthy minds go hand in hand. That’s why it’s so important to make wellness part of your daily routine—especially when learning happens at home.

Encourage movement throughout the day. Take brain breaks. Make time for meals that fuel focus. And don’t forget about sleep; kids need good rest to perform at their best.

Daily habits like taking a walk as a family or eating lunch away from the screen can help students recharge and stay engaged.

4. Build a Support Network—You’re Not Alone

One of the most powerful things about being part of the DCAWI community is knowing you’re not in this alone. Students can connect with peers through clubs, events, and career-themed experiences. Parents can lean on each other through the Learning Coach Community, virtual meetups, and Facebook groups.

If your student needs academic support, reach out to their teacher or explore tutoring options. And don’t hesitate to ask for help—you might be surprised how many other families are navigating the same questions.

5. Celebrate Progress and Stay Positive

A growth mindset goes a long way, especially in an online learning environment where students are developing self-motivation and independence.

Instead of only focusing on grades, take time to celebrate your student’s effort, persistence, and curiosity. Praise them for asking questions, staying organized, or trying something new, even if it didn’t go perfectly.

At DCAWI, students are learning to take charge of their own education. That kind of responsibility is powerful, and your encouragement can help them see how far they’ve come.

Ask your student one thing they’re proud of each week, and one thing they want to improve. It’s a simple way to build self-awareness and momentum.

Ready, Set, Succeed: Make This School Year Count

At DCAWI, every student has the potential to thrive—but no one should have to do it alone. By building good habits and fostering a home environment that values curiosity, consistency, and encouragement, families can set the stage for an amazing school year.

So whether you’re getting ready for your very first live class session or gearing up for another year at DCAWI, remember: progress starts with small steps. Stick to what works, stay connected, and support each other along the way.

Here’s to a focused, fulfilling, and future-ready school year at DCAWI!
